Loan Scholarship Process

The J. N. Tata Endowment awards a one-time loan scholarship to Indian nationals at the beginning of their academic year for full time Postgraduate/ Ph.D./ Postdoctoral studies/Research Fellowshipsabroad, in all fields, irrespective of caste, creed, gender or community. The amount to be awarded to each scholar by way of loan scholarship is determined on the basis of the norms laid down for the purpose, and does not cover the full cost of studies. The amount awarded as the loan scholarship ranges between Rs.1,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-. All selected scholars do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

The selected scholars may also be recommended for a gift scholarship based on their overseas academic performance and partial travel assistance from our allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can be for a maximum amount of Rs.7,50,000/- and the partial travel grant can be a maximum of Rs.50,000/-.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates should be Indian nationals who are graduates of a recognised Indian University and have secured at least 60% in their last academic examination.
  • Candidates who are at the beginning of the second year of their overseas studies (fall 2020 – spring 2021) are also eligible to apply. This is applicable only of the minimum duration of course is 2 years.
  • Candidates in the final year of the degree course and those awaiting results are eligible to apply.
  • Scholars who have already awarded the J N Tata Endowment loan scholarship cannot apply again for the same course.
  • Candidates may apply even if they do not have the admission/offer letters at the time of making the application, from the Universities to which they have applied for the academic year 2020-2021.However they must update their applications status with the Endowment once they secure admission. Candidates not older than 45 years as on 30th June, 2020, with a good academic record and experience in their fields, specialisation or training may also apply. Candidates going overseasfor seminars, conferences and undergraduate studies are not eligible for theJ. N. Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship.

Selection for the Awards

It is a matter of pride to be called a JN Tata Scholar. Staying true to our founder JamsetjeeNusserwanjee’s vision of rewarding the brightest and the best, we follow a rigorous selection process. Candidates may note the following points:

  • Apart from consistent academic performance, we give importance to participation in both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
  • A good GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS score is extremely important for those applying overseas. If you have received a low GRE score, it may be advisable to improve upon it, to increase your chances of receiving the loan scholarship.
  • The statement of purpose carries considerable weight in the selection process. We have provided some guidance on our web site on how you can construct a good statement of purpose. Please ensure that your statement of purpose is written by you and free from plagiarism.
  • After the initial screening of applications, candidates are shortlisted to undergo an online test which will be based on the lines of Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA), on Sunday, 12th April, 2020. Timing and other details will be informed accordingly. Candidates shortlisted based on the online test will be called for an interview. Such candidates should upload scanned copies of the required documents on the application form portal in the upload documents section, before the time of the interview.

The Interview

Candidates should note that to be shortlisted for an interview is no guarantee of receiving the loan scholarship.

  • The technical interview, conducted in person at Mumbai or through skype by the Director of the Endowment and a subject expert, from April onwards, carries the most weight in the selection process. ‘Technical’ refers to evaluation of candidates’ understanding of their subjects – current and future.
  • Candidates should come prepared with knowledge of their subjects and chosen areas of interest with any specialisation, as shown in their application for admission, as they will be examined in depth and detail. Greater weight will be given to depth of understanding of the chosen area of study and career path.
  • Candidates in the beginning of the 2nd year would be assessed also on their first year/semester of the overseas studies.

The final selection of scholars’ for the award of the loan scholarship is based on the following criteria:

(1) Performance at the interview;
(2) Score at the online test
(3) Score based on academic results, GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL scores, Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, research work, statement of purpose, and work experience.

All the Awards will be announced together latest by the first week of July by mail. The Trustees’ decision on the award of scholarships is final. Correspondence in this regard will not be entertained.

Formalities to be completed

  • The candidate and the guarantor (preferably a parent or a relative having the capacity to repay the loan) will have to visit the Administrative Office of the Endowment, by prior appointment, to complete the necessary formalities, after obtaining the visa.
  • They will be required to enter into a legal agreement with the Trustees and provide documentary evidence of the capacity of the guarantor to repay the loan.
  • Candidates must repay the loan scholarship in five equal instalments of 20% between third and seventh year. Candidates must begin to repay earlier than year three if they have started earning.

The is a Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani is an all India Institution declared as Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. BITS Pilani is India’s highest ranked non-Govt. ‘Computer Based Online test’ means the candidate sits in front of a computer and the questions are presented on the computer monitor and the candidate answers the questions on the computer through the use of keyboard or mouse. This is unlike the traditional paper-pencil based test, which is generally offered on a single day to all candidates. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

(i) For admission to any of the First Degree programmes of BITS except B.Pharm.: Candidates should have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) and adequate proficiency in English.

(ii) For admission to B.Pharm.: Candidates should have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) and adequate proficiency in English. However candidates with PCM may also apply for Pharmacy program.

Admission to all the programmes is subject to the conditions given below:

1. The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects (if he/she has taken Biology in BITSAT) subjects in 12th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics / Biology subjects.

2. Only Students who are appearing for 12th class examination in 2020 or who have passed 12th class Examination in 2018 are eligible to appear in the BITSAT-2020 test. If a candidate has taken more than one attempt in 12th class or its equivalent, only his latest performance is considered, provided this attempt has been for the full component of subjects/courses prescribed. Students who have passed 12th examination in 2017 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in BITSAT-2020. Students who are presently studying in BITS at any of its campuses are not eligible to appear in BITSAT-2020.

3. Admissions will be made purely on merit. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtained by the candidate in the BITSAT-2020. However, their eligibility for admission is subject to fulfilling the requirement of minimum marks in 12th examination, as mentioned above.

1. Interested candidates should register their names for BITSAT-2020 by applying in the prescribed application form online. The password that a candidate enters (8 alphanumeric characters) during BITSAT registration process will be required for further accesses including writing the BITSAT.

2. Hence, a candidate should keep it confidential.

TSBIE Services APP Download For Android, iOS: Students Can Check Their Public Examination Center Location and Results of Telangana Intermediate 1st / 2nd year Examinations, March 2020.

TSBIE official mobile application to enable its’ students across the Telangana State to easily access their results upon submitting their respective hall ticket numbers. Also, the student can access exam center locator, student services, and other services when this functionality is available.

The TSBIE has scheduled the Telangana Inter 1st year examination dates from 4th March to 21st March while the Inter 2nd year examinations will be conducted from 5th March to 23rd March. The Board of Intermediate on Monday launched a mobile app that would facilitate easy tracking of examination centres, results, students services for students appearing for the intermediate examinations.

In a press release issued here, the Board said students appearing for the examinations across the State can easily locate the centre assigned to them, get the details and also use online route navigation through the app by submitting their hall ticket number.

The Intermediate Board has made it clear that students will not be allowed into the examination hall even if they are late by one minute. So students should reach the exam centre by 8 a.m. to avoid inconvenience even though the exam starts at 9 a.m.
